Dr Joseph Gelfer is author of "Numen, Old Men: Contemporary Masculine Spiritualities and the Problem of Patriarchy". He is also the editor of “Journal of Men, Masculinities and Spirituality”.
Stereotypical masculinity does not encourage particularly healthy ways of being a man, as well as tending towards a rather patriarchal and homophobic world view. By highlighting how new spiritualities repeat old mistakes in regard to masculinity, we can begin to find an appropriate balance.
